"Malo" by Bebe, English translation of lyrics

"Evil"
Style: Rock monologue, wispy voice, anti-domestic violence
Country: Spain

Apareciste una noche fría
Con olor a tabaco sucio y a ginebra,
El miedo ya me recorría
Mientras cruzaba los deditos tras la puerta.

You appeared one cold night
With the smell of dirty tobacco and of Ginebra, [*brand of alcohol]
The fear already ran through me
While I crossed my little fingers behind the door.

Your little face of a handsome boy has been nibbled away by the time
Through your veins
And your chauvinistic (machista) insecurity is reflected every day
In my little tears.

Refrain A:

(x2)

Not one more time please, (because) I am tired
And I can't bear (with) my heart.
Not one more time, my love,
Please do not yell, that the children sleep.
(x2)

Refrain B:
------------------------------

I will turn myself like the fire,
I will burn your fist of steel,
And from the purple of my cheeks will come the bravery
To collect for my injuries.

Malo, malo, malo eres.
No se daña a quien se quiere, no.
Tonto, tonto, tonto eres.
No te pienses mejor que las mujeres.

(x2)

Evil, evil, evil you are.
One does not harm who one loves, no.
Stupid, stupid, stupid you are.
Do not think yourself better than women.
(x2)
------------------------------

The day is gray when you are present
And the sun comes out again, when you leave,
And the little sorrow of my heart, I have to swallow it
With the stove.

My little face of a sweet girl has been growing old
In the silence.
Every time you call me whore your brain becomes
(Even) smaller.

[Refrain A, x2]

[Refrain B, x2]

Malo, malo, malo eres.
Malo eres porque quieres.
Malo, malo, malo eres.
No me chilles, que me duele.

Evil, evil, evil you are.
Evil you are because you want to be.
Evil, evil, evil you are.
Do not screech at me, that it hurts me.

Eres débil y eres malo
Y no te pienses mejor que yo,
Ni que nadie.

You are weak and you are evil
And do not think yourself better than me,
Nor (better) than anyone.

Y ahora yo me fumo un cigarrito y
Te hecho el humo en el corazoncito,
Porque malo, malo, malo eres.
Tu malo, malo, malo eres, si.
Malo, malo, malo eres, siempre.
Malo, malo, malo eres.

And now I smoke myself a cigarette and
I blow my smoke into your little heart,
Because evil, evil, evil you are.
You evil, evil, evil you are, yes.
Evil, evil, evil you are always.
Evil, evil, evil you are!

Translation Notes:

Notice the use of diminutives in the song:

Mientras cruzaba los deditos tras la puerta. = While I crossed my little fingers behind the door.

Tu carita de niño guapo = Your little face of a handsome boy

En mis lagrimitas = In my little tears

La penita de mi corazón = The little sorrow of my heart

Mi carita de niña linda = My little face of a sweet girl

Overuse of diminutives can sound childlike in Spanish. It is something that children use and that adults use when talking to children. The -ito/-ita suffix literally means "little/small," but not always necessarily in size. It often has connotations of affection and cuteness. In this song, it sounds very meek. It sounds like she is trying to make herself smaller; it sounds like she is flinching.

...At least right up until the last line with diminutive, when she changes her tone.

Te hecho el humo en el corazoncito = I blow my smoke into your little heart

Notice that after this line, the diminutives disappear and her voice suddenly gets stronger.

---

Your little face of a handsome boy has been nibbled away at by time

(Your little face) (of a handsome boy) (it has been) (being eaten) ([by] time)

---

Not one more time please, (because) I am tired
One more time no please that I am tired [lit.]

---

And from the purple of my cheeks will come the bravery to collect for my injuries

cobrarme = to charge (for) myself, to collect (for) myself, to take what is due to me

---

Te hecho el humo en el corazoncito
I blow my smoke in your heart
I throw smoke (to you) into your heart [lit.]

Muchas gracias :)..
It has been a while since I visited this site..just read your response on a very old post about your occupation in my inbox..how cool that you are a researcher too..I'm recently in the research world of medicine as well..good luck sure you can handle the big crowds now!!
Thanks! I did alright as an undergraduate. Now I'm starting graduate school and it's a whole other level. It should be fun once I have something to present. I bet I'll be nervous. It's great that you're also a researcher (and in medicine, no less)! Very cool.
De nada! :D
