"Me Voy" by Julieta Venegas, English translation of lyrics

"I Leave"
Album: Limón y Sal (Lemon and Salt)
Style: Indie, breakup and farewell song, strong vocals
Country: Mexico

Listen:

Julieta Venegas sings her farewell song and explains why the relationship is ending. She uses a sort of sing-song tone that works surprisingly well in this album. Listen at YouTube here or expand the embedded video.

Translation:

Porque no supiste entender a mi corazón,
Lo que había en él.
Porque no tuviste el valor
De ver quién soy.

Because you did not know how to understand my heart,
What was there in it.
Because you didn't have the courage
To see who I am.

Porque no escuchas
Lo que está tan cerca de ti,
Sólo el ruido de afuera
Y yo, que estoy a un lado
Desaparezco para ti.

Because you don't listen
To what is so close to you,
Just the noise from outside
And I, who am right beside [*lit. on the side]
Disappear for you.

No voy a llorar y decir
Que no merezco esto porque
Es probable que lo merezco
Pero no lo quiero, por eso...

I am not going to cry and say
That I do not deserve this because
It's probable that I do deserve it
But I do not want it, that's why...

Chorus:
--------------------------------------------
Me voy, qué lástima pero adiós
Me despido de ti y
Me voy, qué lástima pero adiós
Me despido de ti.

I leave, what a shame but goodbye
I bid my farewell and
I leave, what a shame but goodbye
I bid my farewell to you.
--------------------------------------------

Porque sé que me espera algo mejor
Alguien que sepa darme amor,
De ese que endulza la sal
Y hace que salga el sol.

Because I know that something better waits for me
Someone who knows how to give me love,
The kind that sweetens salt
And makes the sun come out.

Yo que pensé, nunca me iría de ti,
Que es amor del bueno, de toda la vida
Pero hoy entendí que no es
Suficiente para los dos.

Me who thought, I would never leave you,
That it was real love, lifelong love
But today I understood that it isn't
Enough for the two of us.

No voy a llorar y decir
Que no merezco esto porque
Es probable que lo merezco
Pero no lo quiero, por eso...

I am not going to cry and say
That I do not deserve this because
It's probable that I do deserve it
But I do not want it, that's why...

[Chorus x3, "Me voy..." (I leave...)]

Translation Notes:

Me despido de ti y / I bid my farewell and
Me voy, qué lástima pero adiós / I leave, what a shame but goodbye

despedirse de = to part company with, to separate from, to bid farewell to

adios = goodbye, farewell
This form of saying goodbye can sound long-term, like you won't see someone again for a while, if ever.

---

Que es amor del bueno, de toda la vida
That it was real love, lifelong love

amor del bueno = the good kind of love, the real kind of love

Your translation

Your translation could not have been any more precise. Thank you very much for the explanations of the terms not known by non-native speakers. Muchas gracias

thank you for your help translating some unfamiliar idioms!
This is my favorite song right now . . . I dance around to it in my living room. I LOVE it.

(Anonymous)

it should actually be
I leave What a shame but goodbye
I'm dissmissing/ forgetting you
I think you're confusing "despedir" with "despedirse (de)." The focus of the verb is on her (saying farewell, parting ways) and not so much on what happens to the guy (being said goodbye to).

Me Voy

Great translation - Julieta Venegas is brilliant. Any suggestions as to another similar artist (Spanish speaking / singing)? Well done.

Re: Me Voy

Thanks!

You might like these artists if you like Julieta Venegas:

El Sueño de Morfeo (more pop)
La Oreja de Van Gogh (more pop)
Amaral (more rock)

can you translate limon y sal into english? I like this song.
Hey there. I translated Limon y Sal a while ago. Here it is:

I love, love, love this! Your translations always bring up the little things that mine are missing! This song was the song that first made me take notice of Julieta, and opened up a whole new world of music for me! ^_^

I am curious... I'm a monstrous fan of Natalia Lafourcade, particularly her latest record "Hu Hu Hu" (which Julieta makes a guest appearance on!). Natalia's lyrics are simple, poetic and quite easily translated into English even for me... but given your ability to find nuance, I'd be interested to hear your take on some of these songs - particularly "Un Lugar Para Renacer" and "Tiempo Al Viento". I'm fairly confident that my own comprehension of the lyrics is correct, but that I may be missing something.
Thank you for your compliments! I'll add those songs to my list. I just looked them up on YouTube and Natalia has a nice voice. I see why you like her. :)
I just posted "Hu, Hu, Hu" here:

Enjoy!

You helped me a lot...

A girl send me this song after I ignored her a litle bit in our relationship. Just needed to understand... you helped me a lot! thanks!

Re: You helped me a lot...

You're welcome. Too bad you had to hear it from your girlfriend.

hmm.. just wanted to point out that "me voy" can also mean "I am leaving", in present tense, not I leave. Sorry to point out such a minor error, but it is kind of really important in the meaning of the song and lyrics-- "i leave" just doesn't really cut it.
Check your English conjugations. "I leave" is present tense.

I picked the shorter version over "I am leaving" because it sounds better if you are following the music.

THANK YOU! A LOVING TRANSLATION!
You're welcome! It was. I really like this song. It is an unusual breakup song in many ways. There isn't really any anger here.
