"Mamá Tierra" by Macaco, English translation of lyrics

"Mother Earth" (2006)
Album: Ingravitto
Style: Reggae
Countries: Spain, Brazil, Venezuela, Cameroon

Spoken:
---------------------------------------------------------
You can always close your eyes,
But you can't close your ears.

There is an issue of, I would say,
How is it, of love for the earth, no?
That is to say that we are part of the roots of where we are born.
So then thinking about this a song occurs to us.
---------------------------------------------------------

Qué difícil cantarle a tierra madre,

How difficult to sing to mother earth,
Who puts up with us and has seen us grow,
And the parents of your parents
And your children, the ones who will come after (as well).

If you see her like your mother
Perhaps our gaze will change
And let us act like the one who defends his own
And the ones who come with him.

The root at my feet I felt,
I raised my hand and I saw,
That everything goes together, that everything is a circle,
The earth, the sky and once again here.

Like the water from the sea goes to the clouds,
The water rains and again to the start, hear-ear~

Refrain:
---------------------------------------------------------
Grite, grite... ¿O no lo ves?
Va muriendo lentamente, mamá tierra, mother earth.

I yelled, yelled... Oh, don't you see it?
She is dying slowly, mamá tierra, mother earth.
---------------------------------------------------------
(x2)

No se trata de romper ventanas,
Ni farolas ni de cara,
Mejor romper conciencias equivocadas, oye.

It is not a matter of breaking windows,
Nor street lights, nor of money,
Better to break consciences in error, hear.

Nobody taught us, not you nor me,
Nobody explained to us, not you nor me,
Better to learn, let the voices run and perhaps achieve.

(Bbtr trr bombeando) Tierra madre dice...
(Bbtr trr bombeando) Tierra madre te dice... Basta!
(Bbtr trr bombeando, x2) Tierra madre escuche...
(Bbtr trr bombeando) Tierra madre dice... Ponte en pie.
(Bbtr trr bombeando) Ponte en pie.
(Bbtr trr bombeando) Tierra madre dice... Ponte en pie.
(Bbtr trr bombeando) Mirame, iyee~

(Bbtr trr bombarding) Mother earth says...
(Bbtr trr bombarding) Mother earth says to you... Enough! (Stop!)
(Bbtr trr bombarding, x2) Mother earth listen...
(Bbtr trr bombarding) Mother earth says... Get on your feet.
(Bbtr trr bombarding) Get on your feet.
(Bbtr trr bombarding) Mother earth says... Get on your feet.
(Bbtr trr bombarding) Look at me, e-ee~

[Refrain x4]

[Spoken part -- can't hear it well, but it sounds like French]
enfants = children
ta mère = your mother
toi = you

Oh mamá reclama,
Se le apaga la llama,
Y esto no es de hoy
Ya de tiempos de atrás, oihoy~
(Decre) décadas degradando.
[*Note: Decre & tre are sound effects]

Oh mother clamors,
Her flame is going out on her,
And this isn't from today
Already from times past, hear~
(Decre) Decades deteriorating.

Ya mamá reclama,
Se le apaga la llama,
Se la venden hoy,
De lo que fue a lo que soy,
Se (tre) magnifican sus latidos uh-hoy.

Now mother clamors,
Her flame is going out on her,
They sell it to her now,
From what she was to what I am,
Her heartbeats (tre) magnify today.

Llaman llaman
Mamá tierra llaman
Ya que las manejan sin plan
Demasiadas cavan
Otras se caen, luego frutos no dan.

They call, they call,
Mother earth, they call
Now that they maneuver them without plan
Too many burrowing
Others fall, later fruits - they give none.

Llaman llaman
Mamá tierra llaman
Oídos sordos les hace el "man",
Miradas se tapan,
Contaminan hasta que eliminan.

They call, they call
Mother earth, they call
Deaf ears, the "man" gives them,
They avert their gazes,
They contaminate until they eliminate.

[Refrain x4]

Spoken:

Hay una cuestión de, yo diría,
Cómo es, de amor a la tierra...

There is an issue of, I would say,
How is it, of love for the earth...

Translation Notes:

Hay una cuestión de, yo diría...
There is an issue of, I would say...
There is a question of, I would say... [alt.]

---

Que nos aguanta y nos vio crecer
Who puts up with us and has seen us grow

aguantar [verb] = to endure, to tolerate; to put up with; to support

---

Quizás nos cambie la mirada
Perhaps our gaze will change [lit.]
Perhaps our look will change [lit.]
Perhaps our regard (for her) will change [alt.]
Perhaps our perspective will change [alt.]

---

That everything goes together, that everything is a circle
That everything goes united, the everything is a circle [alt.]

---

Like the water from the sea goes to the clouds
Like the water from the sea to the clouds goes [syntax]

---

It is not a matter of breaking windows, nor street lights, nor of money

cara = face

But I was wondering why it was singular. If they meant breaking faces, I would have expected plural (and no "de").

I browsed through meanings of cara on RAE.es and thought of another possible meaning: money (e.g. face on coins).

---

Better to learn, let the voices run and perhaps achieve
Better to learn, let the voices run and perhaps obtain [alt.]

---

Miradas se tapan
They avert their gazes
They cover their gazes (so they can't see) [alt.]
Gazes are averted [syntax]

tapar [verb] = to cover

Watch and Listen:

Earth Day is April 22, so I'm translating a video that National Geographic had for Earth Day 2007. It think it's a celebrity video, because I'm fairly sure that the woman at 3:46 is singer Julieta Venegas.
