English translation notes for "Luz De Mi Vida" by Los Lobos

Notes for "Luz De Mi Vida" by Los Lobos
Album: Good Morning Aztlán

First a message from Cairaguas:

This isn't really a translation since the song is already half in English. This song is not Spanglish, however, but a classic example of something called "code-switching," which is the fluid movement from one language to another in order to complete a thought. Many fluently bilingual or multilingual speakers code-switch to a certain extent. Spanglish is a general word encompassing many linguistic phenomena from Spanish-English contact, not just this one.

Anyway...

Song lyrics and notes:

Cuando you and me
We were just chiquillos
We would always run
Through the tall nopal
We would often say
Say to each other
There could be no fin
Siempre los dos

-cuando = when
-chiquillos = kids; little brats (affectionately, not negatively)
-nopal = tall cacti plant that grows in the Southwest US and Mexico
-fin = end
-siempre los dos = always the two of us; us two forever

Luz de mi vida
Eres la voz de mi son
You are forever
Light of my corazón

-luz de mi vida = light of my life (refering to a person)
-eres la voz de mi son = you are the voice of my rhythm
-note: I say "rhythm" in a very general way. Rhythm in Spanish is actually ritmo.
-son literally refers to sound, but it sort of means the spirit of music. In Cuba, it refers to popular, danceable music.
-corazón = heart

It was en la mañana
In our rinconcito
Was the time you played me
Sang me your canción
Pues when I heard your voice
Y tu melodia
You so touched my heart
And so moved my soul

-en la mañana = in the morning
-rinconcito = little corner (as of a house); our "spot"
-cancíon = song
-pues when = well when
-y tu melodia = and your melody

Luz de mi vida
Eres la voz de mi son
You are forever
Light of my corazón

I remember everything as you
And in all the things that I do
And en the calle y en el cuartel
Me recuerdo de tu querer

-en la calle y en el cuartel = in the street and in the quarter
-cuartel, from French quartier
-me recuerdo de tu querer = I remember your affection; I remind myself of your loving

Luz de mi vida
Eres la voz de mi son

I remember everything as you
And in all the things that I do
And en the calle y en el cuartel
Me recuerdo de tu querer
