"Sin Documentos" by Los Rodriguez, Julieta Venegas, English translation of lyrics

"Without Documents"
Album: Sin Documentos (Without Documents), 1993, Los Rodriguez
Style: Rock, keyboard and drum set
Country: Argentina, Spain

Album: Limón y Sal (Lemon and Salt), 2006, Julieta Venegas
Style: Folk rock with elements of Mexican regional music
Country: Mexico

Listen:

This is a song about wanting to continue life with someone you love. I first heard Julieta Venegas' cover. The instruments are interesting; Julieta use an accordion, which is an instrument commonly heard in music from some regions of Mexico, but not common for genres in the rock spectrum. Hear the original rock song by Los Rodriguez and the cover by Julieta Venegas at YouTube. The translation follows the Julieta Venegas cover.

Translation:

{Y aquí vamos, hombres...}

{And here we go, guys...}

Chorus A:
------------------------------------------------------------------

Let me cross the wind without documents;
I'll do it for the time we had together.

Porque no queda salida
Porque pareces dormido,
Porque buscando tu sonrisa,
Estaría toda mi vida.

Because there is no escape [*alt. Because there is no exit left]
Because you seem to be asleep,
Because looking for your smile,
I would stay my whole life.

I want to be the only one who bites your mouth.
I want to know that life with you
Is not going to end.
------------------------------------------------------------------/end chorus A

Let me (be the one that) closes your eyes tonight
And tomorrow I will come
With a cigarette to bed.

Porque no tengo más intenciones que seguir
Bebiendo de esta copa
Que no está tan rota.

Because I have no other intentions than to keep
Drinking from this wine glass [*copa (f. noun) = glass, goblet; wine glass]
That isn't so broken.

I want to be the only one who bites your mouth.
I want to know that life with you
Is not going to end.

Chorus B:
------------------------------------------------------------------
Porque sí, porque sí,
Porque en esta vida
No quiero pasar un día entero
Sin ti.

Because so, because so, [*lit. Because yes, because yes]
Because in this life
I do not want to spend a whole day
Without you.

Porque sí, porque sí,
Porque mientras espero, por ti me muero,
Y no quiero seguir así.

Because so, because so,
Because while I wait for you, I die,
And I do not want to continue like this.
------------------------------------------------------------------/end chorus B

Because so, because so, because so - because I do not want to live without you.
Because so, because so, because so - I want to be the only one, the only one
Because so, because so, because so - that can reach you [*alt. that will make it to you].
Because so, because so, because so - ay!

I want to be the only one who bites your mouth.
I want to know that life with you
Is not going to end.

Translation Notes:

Let me cross the wind without documents;
(Because/for) I'll do it for the time we had together.

The word que here acts to indicate that an explanation is coming. It is shorthand for any phrase that ends in que that makes sense in context.

Examples:

que... = for/that...
porque... = because...
es que... = it’s that; it’s because...

---

Porque sí
Because so
Because yes [*lit.]

Great choice! I'm virtually certain you will have have heard it before, but just in case you have not - this was the original 1993 version of Sin Documentos, by Los Rodriguez:

Led by a young Andres Calamaro, this was a much more straightforward macho guitar rock version. Juli's is a more moody and haunting. I like both a lot. How about you?

LOL. That Youtube link does not work. Perdon. I'll try it in plain text:

Thanks! I hadn't heard the original actually. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I updated the beginning of the post to mention both. I like the original version and Juli's version, too.

Glad you liked it the original Sin Documentos.

As far as I can tell, she is starting to gain some wider recognition in the US. I even noticed a longish piece on her in Newsweek (of all places) recently.

I saw an excellent Guatemalan singer called Gaby Moreno at a little club in London last week. She has a strong and expressive voice and a range of styles - including a sort of latino bluesy soul, like this:

I was very impressed.

ps Over the past few months your blog has converted me into a La Santa Cecilia fan. I had never even heard of them before. A great find. THANKS!
Thanks! Sometimes I get busy with real life and don't have time to search for new artists, so I like recommendations. I like her vocals. They really are very blues/soul influenced.

I think you are right about Ana Tijoux getting more recognition. I heard her on National Public Radio last year. I also put "Ana Tijoux" into YouTube and found out that her 1977 song was used on Breaking Bad in 2011.

I have had 1977 in my work folder almost entirely translated for a while, except for a few lines that are mistranscribed. I'll figure it out eventually.

I'm glad I converted you to La Santa Cecilia. They're also really good!
