"Andamos Huyendo" by Julieta Venegas, English translation of lyrics

"We Are Fleeing"
Album: Aquí (Here), 1997
Style: Alternative rock, piano, about persecution
Country: Mexico

Listen:

This is a song from Julieta Venegas' debut album. The subjects of the song are people in danger, persecuted, and hiding. The song has a historical feel to it, and my first thought was that it referenced ethnic and religious persecutions during WWII from the point of view of a young person. No details tie to song to any time period or specific situation, though. It is just a song about the persecuted. Listen to it at YouTube here.

Translation:

¿De qué andamos huyendo
Si no hemos hecho nada?
Amigos desaparecidos,
¿Dónde están para ayudarnos?

What are we fleeing from,
If we have not done anything?
Disappeared friends,
Where are they to help us?

Podría olvidar mil veces mi nombre.
No recuerdo.
Podría olvidar esa cara que me sigue.

I could forget my name a thousand times.
I don't remember.
I could forget that face that follows me.

Aaah...

¿De qué andamos huyendo
Si no hemos hecho nada?
Somos los escondidos en el armario.
Será mejor que no escuchen lo que hablamos,
Aunque lo que decimos no es novedad.

What are we fleeing from,
If we have not done anything?
We are the ones hidden in the wardrobe.
It would be better if they didn't hear what we talk about,
Though what we say isn't anything new.

Chorus:
-------------------------------------------------------
Y cada día una cara nueva que
Me habla de cosas que debo recordar.
Y cada día una cara nueva más.
No me suena familiar.
Debo recordar.

And every day a new face that
Talks to me about things I must remember.
And every day a new face more.
It doesn't sound familiar.
I must remember.
-------------------------------------------------------

Somos los escondidos. Somos los perseguidos.
[Repeated in background]

We are the hidden ones. We are the persecuted ones.
[Repeated in background]

Pregunto si hubo días de paz.
Debo encontrarlos, debo recordar.

(x2)

I ask myself if there were once days of peace.
I must find them, I must remember.
(x2)

[Chorus: "Y cada día una cara nueva..."]

(Somos los escondidos. Somos los perseguidos.)

(We are the hidden ones. We are the persecuted ones.)

¿De qué andamos huyendo
Si no hemos hecho nada?
Somos los escondidos en el armario.

What are we fleeing from,
If we have not done anything?
We are the ones hidden in the wardrobe.

¿De qué andamos huyendo
Si no cometimos nada?
Somos los perseguidos sin saber porqué.
Debo recordar.

What are we fleeing from,
If we have not committed any act?
We are the persecuted ones, without knowing why.
I must remember.

Translation Notes:

There are many possible historical sources contributing to the themes of this song. She may be responding to forced disappearances in Latin America. Julieta was born in 1970 and may have known Jewish WWII refugees in Mexico a generation or two older than her. It could also be about recently arrived undocumented immigrants who are not yet familiar with their new country’s culture and need to learn it quickly. I get the impression that the narrator of the song is supposed to be a child or young person. I wasn't able to find an interview where she discussed her inspirations for the song.
