"Maria la del Barrio" by Thalia, English translation of lyrics

"Maria of the Barrio"
Style: Pop
Country: Mexico

And to much honor, Maria of the Barrio am I.
The one that as a little runt was left all alone
And to change her luck
From her dear barrio went away
So she could eat.

And to much honor, Maria of the Barrio am I.
The one that as a young girl crazily fell in love
And to cure ills
She unhinged herself
When he left her.

(x2)

Maria, Maria of the Barrio no, don't cry anymore.
Maria, Maria of the Barrio, for your love he will return.
(x2)

And to much honor, Maria of the Barrio am I.
The one who as a young lady, her son abandoned
And to cover up that sin
She turned him into her secret
Father, forgive me, Father.

Maria, Maria of the Barrio no, don't cry anymore.
---, for your love he will return.
---, don't blame yourself anymore.
---, God will forgive you.

Soy Maria, Maria la del Barrio
Que de mi corazón se adueño,
Todita mi ilusión él se llevó.

I am Maria, Maria of the Barrio
Of whose heart he made himself owner,
All my illusion, he took it.

I am Maria, Maria of the Barrio.
May he return to me, I plead to God
Because I lose myself without his love.

Soy Maria, Maria of the Barrio.
Sangre de mi sangre abandoné.
Doy mi vida por volverlo a ver.

I am Maria, Maria of the Barrio.
I abandoned blood of my blood.
I give my life to see him again.

Soy Maria, Maria of the Barrio.
Ay! Ayudame Señor
A enmendar este cruel error.
Soy Maria, Maria la del Barrio.

I am Maria, Maria of the Barrio.
Oh! Help me God
To mend this cruel error.
I am Maria, Maria of the Barrio.

Maria, Maria of the Barrio no, don't cry anymore.
---, for your love he will return.
---, don't blame yourself anymore.
---, God will forgive you.

Maria la del Barrio soy yo.
Por amor fue que todo pasó.
Maria la del Barrio soy yo.
Cuanto sufre mi herido corazón.

Maria of the Barrio am I.
It was for love that all this happened.
Maria of the Barrio am I.
How much my wounded heart suffers.

Maria la del Barrio soy yo.
Quiera Dios mi pecado perdonar,*
Maria la del Barrio soy yo,
Para que vuelva la felicidad.

Maria of the Barrio am I.
May God want to forgive my sin,
Maria of the Barrio am I,
So that happiness can return to me.

Translation Notes:

* escuincla = [slang, masculine is escuincle] kid, runt

* resola = re- (prefix for emphasis) + sola (alone) = totally alone, all alone

* pa' = shortened form of para, heard in Mexican Spanish

* chamaca = [slang] kid, young girl

* Se desquició = She unhindged herself (or himself)

This might mean that she went crazy or that she separated herself. I did not watch the soap opera.

* señito = shortened version of señorita or señora [thank you, Caray, Caray!]

* Señor = When used by itself without previous reference, it refers to God. Literally, it means Sir, Lord, or Mr.

* Quiera Dios mi pecado perdonar [subjunctive tense!] = May God want to forgive my sin

If you are still a beginner in Spanish, subjunctive phrases that leave out the "que" might pass you by. You can tell this is subjunctive from the verbs.

Quiera Dios = may God want, may God wish

* Maria la del Barrio soy (yo) = Maria of the Barrio am I, Maria of the Barrio is me

"Maria del Barrio" (without "la") would mean Maria of the Barrio, too. The "la" gives it more emphasis. It is THE Maria of the Barrio. Maria, Her, from the Barrio.

General Notes:

This was the title song of a soap opera starring Thalia.
